Design Thinking is one of the key techniques that we teach on the Digital Innovators Skills Programme. We introduce it early on so that you can get chance to apply the techniques as much as possible. Here are a list of books recommended by Pete that will give you more insight into this industry standard technique.

Creative Confidence – Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All by David Kelley and Tom Kelley

David Kelley is the founder of IDEO, one of the world’s leading innovation and design firms, as well as the creator of the d.school at Stanford University. Tom Kelley is the a Partner at IDEO, and the author of the bestselling The Art of Innovation and The Ten Faces of Innovation.

This book not only gives a lot of great tips and techniques for unleashing your creative self but shows how you can apply these within the context of a design thinking framework to build innovative new products. It discusses the importance of empathy in understanding users and how to actually move from ideas to actions. Highly recommended if you want to dig deeper into the more creative aspects of Design Thinking.

Change by Design by Tim Brown

Tim Brown is CEO of the innovation and design company IDEO as well as a speaker at TED where he delivered the talk Tales of creativity and play in 2008.

This book introduces Design Thinking, the collaborative process by which the designer’s sensibilities and methods are employed to match people’s needs with what is technically feasible and a viable business strategy. The book emphasises the human-centered approach to problem-solving that helps people and organisations become more innovative and creative.

The Design Thinking Playbook by Michael Lewrick, Patrick Link, Larry Leifer.

This book shows how the ‘digitized future’ using new design criteria to create real value for the user. It provides a framework showing how to:

  • Gather the right people to build highly-motivated teams.
  • Apply Design Thinking, Systems Thinking, Big Data Analytics, and Lean Start-up using new tools and a fresh new perspective.
  • Create Minimum Viable Ecosystems (MVEs) for digital processes and services which becomes for example essential in building blockchain applications.
